Operations – An overview

By Laurie Mosse – February 27, 2019

Operations, a subject rarely examined in a small or medium size company where management is constantly focused on growth.

The operations of any company are defined as “An organized, purposeful structure that consists of interrelated and interdependent elements (components, entities, factors, members, parts, etc.).” The key is how these components are managed.

This is the first in a series of blogs aimed at providing clear insight into operations, believed to be the core of any business.

To begin, we must examine and document every area of the company – finding out what they do, how they do it and more importantly ‘why’ they do it. To ensure the success of this exercise, it is crucial that all personnel be involved in the process. After completing this exercise, we must determine whether the data gathered makes sense and if any pieces are missing.

Why is all of this so important? Often, when the ‘components’ are not clearly defined and well understood by all, a breakdown in communication will occur. When this happens, things will eventually go wrong. Without having a complete understanding, it is extremely difficult to pinpoint causes, determine solutions and enact preventive measures.

The bi-products of this exercise are the revelations in the areas of defined responsibilities, reporting structure, internal communication and the establishment of individual and company goals, subjects I’ll talk about later on.
